we go to the bookstore
and drink smoothies
in the corner of the
little café
she asks about gymnastics
and my life
being polite

I am uncomfortable
because Angie is
the one sought
not the seeker
and I’m not sure
I have anything valuable to say
in fact
I know I don’t
so I ask
but I am already
thinking about what I could
possibly say to her

of the three of us, she is the closest to God
I am somewhere in the middle
maybe
and Mel waves to God
from the midst of her own life

Angie takes the storms in stride
as if the boat isn’t even rocking
but today she is rocked
I can see it in her eyes
and this rocks my boat, too
because if Angie can get rocked
then what does that mean for me?
